Archives in the age of reproducibility
In her fascinating case study of Albert Kahn's cinematic Archives de la Planète in Paris, Paula Amad demonstrates cinema's profound impact on traditional concepts of the archive in France in the early 20th century. Kahn had conceived that his commissioned filmic archives from around the globe would potentially displace conventional paper archives (hence, the "counter-archival" aspirations of Kahn's project and highlight of Amad's study), and while this was not to be, it focuses the ontologies of particular media in relation to memory and history in a manner that photography had already begun to problematize.
